Why We Broke Up @ the GSLFringe

A blanket, a teddy bear, a book of poems, a paper crane, and other items collected over the course relationship are featured in Why We Broke Up, an original piece written by Youth Theatre Conservatory. Students wrote fictional break-up letters which detailed why they were returning a specific item given to them by their ex.

Youth Theatre's Conservatory is an award-winning training program for advanced high school actors. It is open to students who want to take their work to the next level. Conservatory students regularly travel to perform and compete in state and national competitions. Student Directed

Spoon River @ the GSLFringe

Spoon River Anthology @ the GSLFringe

Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a collection of short poems that collectively narrates the epitaphs of the residents of Spoon River, a fictional small town. As the citizens reflect on the dreams, secrets, and regrets of their lives, they paint a gritty and honest portrait of the town as all of their pasts are illuminated. High School Students from Youth Theatre's Virtual Summer Sessions have chosen the characters to play and the pieces to share. Directed by Sydney Stephan Assisted by Francesca Hsieh

Summer 2020 goes Virtual

First of all, I want to thank everyone for your patience as we have tried to figure out what we can and cannot do this summer. Youth Theatre will not be holding any in-person classes this summer.

I understand that many of you may not be interested in a virtual camp. I get it. My 12-year-old daughter's online school experience this spring was full of ups and downs. But, I just finished directing an online production with students ages 7 to 14 and I was so pleased with how Zoom rehearsals turned out. I was surprised by how the online platforms we used allowed me more time to get to know and work with students individually. For those of you with students who are missing a little theatre in their lives, we hope to spark their imagination and bring a little joy.

I do hope you and yours are all doing well at this time.

Warmly,
Penny Caywood ~ Artistic Director

THE SHOW MUST GO ONLINE is presented through special arrangement with Beat by Beat Press (www.bbbpress.com).

Eco-Tales

In mid-February Conservatory split into three teams to devise a new work. They were instructed to select a climate change issue and a well-known fairytale or legend to serve as the inspiration for their piece or as main source of text structure.

These devised theatre pieces were to be performed at the end of March, but the Shelter-in-Place orders have prevented us to continue working on the pieces in the same way.

The scripts were rewritten as radio plays and will be presented on our website. (www.youththeatre.utah.edu/conservatory)

Take a listen to the first of three peices from ECO-TALES called PLEASURE ISLAND.

BREAKING NEWS!

Youth Theatre is excited to work with our friends at @bbbpress, the creators of hits such as NOBLE GNARBLE, WE ARE MONSTERS, and SPACE PIRATES to present the world’s very first virtual children’s musical, THE SHOW MUST GO ONLINE!

THE SHOW MUST GO ONLINE! is a virtual children’s musical that is rehearsed and performed remotely. Each actor will receive a 1-minute monologue or song to rehearse, video record, and upload remotely. When all the videos are played in order, they tell the hilarious story of a group of passionate students desperate to keep their musical alive… online!

AUDITIONS – For ages 8 – 14. This is a cast of 20 young actors. Great parts with lots of singing and acting opportunities.

  1. Send one 45 seconds to 1-minute song from a Broadway musical and talk about why you wish to be involved. You also welcome to do something silly (tell a joke, do a special skill, whatever shows off who YOU are!)
  2. Do not submit a video from a previous performance. It should be a performance of you singing from home.
  3. You can submit your audition through our FLIPGRID.
    1. Register for our free online classes to get the password.
  4. OR … upload your video to Youtube as an unlisted video.
  5. E-mail your audition video to p.caywood@utah.edu by Saturday, April 11 at 12pm.

REHEARSALS
We will meet as a cast a couple of times via ZOOM.  Independent rehearsals for monologue and song coaching will happen outside of that time. You will be responsible for filming your segment and sending them in for notes and adjustments before we do a “final take”.  You’ll need your computer, a good webcam with a microphone, and a pair of headphones.

TUITION
We will be charging a nominal tuition fee of $25 if you are cast.

OPENING NIGHT
The “opening night” of our show will be a Watch Party on YouTube for Youth Theatre families to watch online together! (Time TBA)

Covid19 Updates

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” – Dr. Seuss

Earlier this week, the University of Utah announced that ALL summer courses will be canceled or shifting to an online format. After consulting with the Chair of the Department of Theatre and the Associate Dean of Continuing Education and Community Engagement, it has been recommended that any youth program scheduled to begin before July 1st should be canceled or shifted to an online format. Although a final determination about programs operating after July 1st has not been made, there is no official date as to when this decision might be reevaluated by the University.

The summer is the heart of our program and we are heartbroken about the impact this will have on theatre school, but the health and safety of our Youth Theatre community — our staff and teen aides, volunteers, guests, students, and our many friends and supporters — is our top priority.

With this in mind …

  • Youth Theatre will be canceling in-person school and community programs until further notice.
  • We will monitor developments closely and, in consultation with the University administration, will reassess as needed.
  • For those who already have registered for summer courses, we will be refunding your tuition immediately as we have no firm answers about being allowed to run our summer sessions on campus.
  • We are offering FREE online courses this month.
  • We are brainstorming ways to bring our families new classes and content this summer.
  • We are researching grant opportunities to help us bridge this unplanned financial gap.

The implications for YTU will be severe without the summer sessions. We need your support.  If your family has been enriched by our programming in schools, after-school, in the summer, or on stage, we hope you will help us ensure they will be there for future student artists.

How you can help –

  • If you are in a position that you can donate to our program, we would appreciate the support.
  • If you are a part of a funding organization, please share your applications with us.
  • Check back for updates and opportunities.

Summer Registration

Our summer sessions are now open for registration. You can go to our SUMMER PAGE for details or go directly to THIS LINK. We are using a new registration system so we hope the process is more streamlined for you.

We are aware that we are in a dynamic situation and things are quickly evolving. While we can’t predict the future, we believe that Theatre School will happen this summer.  We are approaching these months before the summer as a time for patience, hope, and planning.

We will continue to watch for guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and our state health department. We will also be consulting with our colleagues and advisors before making decisions that could have an impact on our students.

We will be in contact with you as we plan for the summer through evolving information and contingencies.

Thank you for continuing to support our program.

Online Challenges

Join on us Flipgrid for some fun theatre challenges.
