ABOUT THE AUDITION
The audition will be broken up in two parts: Singing and Dancing. Nothing will be too difficult, it's mostly to see how quickly you can pick up material.
For the Singing Audition we will sing a portion of ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE from the show.
For the Dance Audition we will be using the music GREEN EGGS AND HAM from the finale/bows of the show.
Here are the music tracks if you'd like to get familiar with the music before Friday.
Lyrics
Please sing for the character Jojo. Jojo is a young Who who is stuck on the tiniest planet.
So alone in the universe
My own planets and stars are glowing (Horton: Alone in the universe)
No one notices anything, not one person is listening
They don't have any way of knowing
(Horton: And I can fly)
I can fly ------
(Horton: Around the moon and) far beyond the sky
Well someday soon, you will hear my plea
One small voice in the universe
One true friend in the universe
Please believe in me

- Our auditions are run like a callback. Everyone will participate in three parts of the process - singing, dancing, and acting. Auditionees will be taught a song from the show and asked to sing 16 bars individually. They will also learn a short dance combination and asked to dance in a small group. Auditionees will also be given a short scene to read in a small group, too. Not only are we looking for talented young people, but we also like to see how well they work with others and how quickly they can pick up music and other material.
- These materials (scenes and music) will be sent out prior to the audition for those who have filled out the audition form.
- Auditionees should plan to be there for the entire time of their audition block.
Auditions
Based on a collection of whimsical poems by Phillip Van Wagoner, Could You Hug A Cactus? is a musical revue that follows a group of kids as they come together to create a show that’s bursting with poems and creativity. One by one, they each share their imaginative creations, until a nervous performer panics and refuses to contribute a poem. Can the cast help him shed self-doubt and ignite a creative spark?
Auditions are by Video Submission. Auditions are due by January 17th.

Spoon River Anthology @ the GSLFringe
Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a collection of short poems that collectively narrates the epitaphs of the residents of Spoon River, a fictional small town. As the citizens reflect on the dreams, secrets, and regrets of their lives, they paint a gritty and honest portrait of the town as all of their pasts are illuminated. Drama at a Distance
Summer 2020 goes Virtual
First of all, I want to thank everyone for your patience as we have tried to figure out what we can and cannot do this summer. Youth Theatre will not be holding any in-person classes this summer.
I understand that many of you may not be interested in a virtual camp. I get it. My 12-year-old daughter's online school experience this spring was full of ups and downs. But, I just finished directing an online production with students ages 7 to 14 and I was so pleased with how Zoom rehearsals turned out. I was surprised by how the online platforms we used allowed me more time to get to know and work with students individually. For those of you with students who are missing a little theatre in their lives, we hope to spark their imagination and bring a little joy.
- We are offering classes for every age group: Kindergarten through 12th grade.
- We have Open Share opportunities for our entire community. Share your talents with us.
- We will even have an award show with our annual Rising Star and YTU Scholarship Awards.
Please consider following us on social media to hear about our events first.
I do hope you and yours are all doing well at this time.
Warmly,
Penny Caywood ~ Artistic Director
