AFTER THE SHOW
Create a Colony
Write all About It
Responding to a Theme: Tolerance
After reading the book to the students or seeing the play, ask them:
- Why did the other naked mole rats make fun of Wilbur?
- How do you think Wilbur felt when the others didn’t like that he wore clothes?
- Why do people sometimes make fun of other people?
- Why is this not a good idea?
- Have you ever felt like Wilbur?
- What did the naked mole rats learn when they listened to Grand–pah?
- How did they change?
- Do you think people can change, too?
- What did you learn from this book?
After the discussion above, help students think of times when they wanted to do something that was different.
Mole Rat Madlibs
Define ‘adjective’ to the students and compile a class list of adjectives that the students heard in the play.
After discussing the importance of adjectives have the students complete a Naked Mole Rat Mad Lib. Have a few students share their Mad Lib with the class.

Post Show Discussion Questions
- How did the other mole rats respond to seeing Wilbur wearing clothes for the first time? Why do you think they reacted that way? What could they have done differently?
- What makes someone a good friend? How can you tell if your friends accept you for who you are? What are some ways you can show others that you accept them for who they are? What are some ways of making people feel welcome and included?
- As the leader of the colony, it is Grand-Pah’s responsibility to make sure that all of the mole rats are safe and happy. What does safety look like? What are some rules you have in your school or classroom that help keep people safe?
- When Grand-Pah decides not to force Wilbur to leave the colony, he makes the colony a place where it is safe for Wilbur to be himself. Do you have rules in your school or classroom that help make it safe for people to be themselves?
- Before Grand-Pah makes his proclamation to the colony, he tells Grande “thinking means using your head. It also means using your heart.” What do you think Grand-Pah means by this? What does it look like to use both your head and your heart when you are deciding how to treat others?
- Think about how the naked mole rats treated Wilbur before Grand-Pah’s proclamation, how would you have felt to have been Wilbur in that moment? How about after Grand-Pah’s proclamation?
- What made the colony change from everyone being naked to some mole rats wearing clothing? Why did some choose to stay naked?
