Overview
We are thrilled to return for our 12th year at the Musical Theatre Competitions of America Festival in California! The MTCA Festival celebrates musical theatre while empowering, educating, and elevating student performers — both onstage and beyond. This is an opportunity to bring a mini production and a showtune to competition while giving students professional training and industry exposure through Broadway-style auditions, masterclasses, competition performances, and personalized adjudicator feedback.
Program & Trip Dates
Festival Trip: February 4–9, 2027.
Destination: Garden Grove and Anaheim, California.
Exact departure/return times will be shared after flights and ground transportation are finalized.
Tuition & Fees
MTCA Competition Training tuition: $200 (13 rehearsals / 26 hours).
California Competition Trip fee: $2,388 — includes round-trip airfare (SLC–John Wayne), ground transportation in California, shared hotel accommodations, student festival registration ($645), selected meals, festival activities/masterclasses, professional adjudication and feedback, a two-day Disneyland Park Hopper ticket, and adult supervision.
Optional solos, monologues, and duets are billed separately and not included in the standard trip fee.
Students participate in 13 two-hour rehearsals (26 hours total) focused on acting through song, vocal performance and musicality, dance and movement, character development, ensemble storytelling, audition technique, stage presence and performance confidence, competition preparation, and professionalism/team-building.
Consistent attendance is essential.
Group Competition Events: Musical Production & Showtune — the group presents material from one musical production and one song (entry fees $425/musical, $350/showtune, covered by university support, sponsorships, or group fundraising, not charged to student tuition).
Optional Individual Events: Solo/Monologue ($145/routine, student pays full fee) and Duet ($145/routine, split between two performers — $72.50 each); individual entries are subject to approval based on readiness, scheduling, and festival limits.
Depending on the official schedule, students may also access Broadway-style audition experiences, masterclasses with working professionals, personalized adjudication, and workshops in acting, singing, dancing, and audition technique.
Special Activities
The trip includes a two-day Disneyland Park Hopper experience — time to celebrate the students' work, strengthen friendships, and experience live entertainment, design, and performance in a world-class environment.
Detailed expectations on supervision, check-in, group assignments, and spending money are shared before the trip.
A complete itinerary is distributed after flights, festival schedule, hotel arrangements, performance times, and Disneyland reservations are finalized — covering flight info, airport arrival requirements, ground transportation, hotel/room assignments, competition calls and performance times, masterclasses/activities, meals, Disneyland plans, supervision groups, emergency contacts, and return travel.

Accommodations
Students and staff stay together at the official competition hotel — Hyatt Regency Orange County (11999 Harbor Blvd, Garden Grove, CA), or a nearby hotel chosen for safety, value, and proximity.
When possible we prioritize suite-style rooms so students have their own beds while housing more students safely per room.
Transportation
Round-trip airfare from Salt Lake City to John Wayne Airport and ground transportation in California are included in the trip fee.
The trip fee includes lunch and dinner on Feb 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Students purchase their own meals at Disneyland: lunch and dinner on Feb 8, and lunch on Feb 9.
The final itinerary will clarify breakfast and any other independently-purchased meals.
Families provide allergy/dietary/medication information before departure; personal snacks welcome.
Chaperones assist with transportation, supervision, communication, and safety.
MTCA offers three wristband options:
- Festival Access Only ($220, recommended for most chaperones),
- All-Access ($345, includes the awards ceremony — needed for adults supervising seniors, who are typically the only students required to attend), and
- Awards Ceremony Only ($125).
Chaperone airfare, accommodations, Disneyland admission, meals, and wristbands are communicated separately once the chaperone team and supervision assignments are confirmed. There are no limits in the number of chaperones we can take.
A detailed packing list is provided closer to departure.
