Students will participate in 15 two-hour coaching and rehearsal sessions before the competition, focused on Shakespearean text and language, character development, voice/movement/physical storytelling, scene study and ensemble work, monologue and duo/trio coaching, competition preparation, and performance confidence/professionalism.
Consistent attendance is essential — students are expected to arrive prepared, learn lines independently, and attend all required rehearsals.
Students may compete in monologues, duo/trio scenes, and our group ensemble scene.
Additional competition opportunities may be available depending on team enrollment and the official event schedule.
Performances are evaluated on voice, movement, character, understanding of the text, rhythm, tempo, and ensemble communication.
Competition assignments are made according to student readiness, team needs, event limits, and official rules.
Before the trip, students share their pieces in an informal preview performance for family and friends (date TBA).
A detailed itinerary is distributed once performance times, workshops, and festival tickets are finalized, covering departure/return info, transportation assignments, accommodations, meals, competition performance times, workshops, festival performances, team meetings, and emergency contacts.

Accommodations
The team stays together in shared accommodations near Southern Utah University — building friendships, sharing meals, rehearsing, and supporting one another throughout the competition.
Transportation
Students travel in rented SUVs or similar vehicles driven by approved adult drivers.
Transportation plans are based on final enrollment, available vehicle capacity, and the official competition schedule.
The trip fee includes meals and groceries identified in the final itinerary.
Students may bring personal snacks, particularly for dietary preferences or health-related needs.
Families provide allergy/dietary/medication information before departure.
The team is supported by the lead teacher, one assistant, and parent chaperones who help drive and supervise.
Because shared-accommodation space is limited, we cannot host all parents overnight with the team. Once students are registered, the YTU Director will reach out to parents who want to chaperone and determine how many parents we need. Other parents wishing to attend may arrange their own accommodations in Cedar City.
Student performance times are shared once available.
Family encouragement matters, but parents are not required to attend — we'll document the trip and share photos.
A complete packing list is provided closer to departure.
Students should plan for comfortable clothing, walking shoes, warm layers, toiletries, required medications, chargers, competition clothing, and any requested costume pieces.
Cedar City weather changes quickly in October — prepare for warm afternoons and cold mornings/evenings.
